ACMA lesson plans on perils of ‘sexting’ prove popular with schools

ACMA media release 65/2011 – 18 July

An increasing number of schools Australia-wide are adopting the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s new comprehensive, lesson plans on ‘sexting’.

Greg Gebhart, Senior Education Trainer for the ACMA , said the plans provide students with realistic scenarios and educate them about the social and legal consequences of ‘sexting’-the sending of sexual messages, photos or videos, online or using a mobile phone.

‘Over the last month more than 63,000 ‘sexting’ brochures have been distributed, and over three hundred copies of the ACMA’s Cybersmart ‘sexting’ lesson plans have been downloaded,’ said Mr Gebhart.

‘The popularity of these educational resources suggests that ‘sexting’ is a top of mind issue for schools and teachers and is perceived as a growing risk for teenagers.’

‘Sharing sexually suggestive images or text messages may be seen as innocent flirting or amusement, but ‘sexting’ can have serious personal, social and legal consequence,’ he said.

‘The ACMA’s lessons are easily adaptable in the classroom, free of charge and part of a suite of engaging interactive resources which educate students about cybersafety issues.

‘An adolescent’s complicated relationship with their body image, emerging sexuality and personal identity is difficult enough to navigate without being made public in a graphic way.’

Research conducted by the Pew Research Centre shows that ‘sexting’ has garnered increased attention in recent years-18 per cent of 14-17 year olds who own a mobile phone said they have received a ‘sext’ from someone they know. The same study showed that 47 per cent of teenagers regretted sending some of the messages they had sent.

‘It is imperative that schools have policies and programs in place to educate and empower children and families about ‘sexting’ and how to reduce exposure and risks,’ said Mr Gebhart.

0 Scam Alerts No Comments

ACMA media release 54/2011 – 1 June

When it comes to making sure our online experiences are safe and secure, the Australian Communications and Media Authority believes we can all take some time to brush up on the basics.

To help do that, the ACMA launched NetBasics – a new cyber security education resource for teenagers as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Week in Sydney at the Marsden High School in West Ryde.

NetBasics is a series of 11 short animated episodes that follow the online experiences of the Jones family. Targeted at middle school students (aged 12 -15 year-olds), NetBasics reinforces the foundations of online security and covers important cyber security topics such as online shopping, online trickery, online banking and the importance of installing and updating security software.

‘Employing basic security precautions is crucial to minimise the risk of falling prey to cyber criminals,’ said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman ‘NetBasics will help equip teenagers with the skills and knowledge they need to ensure their online experiences are safe, secure and rewarding.’

All of the NetBasics episodes and support materials are hosted on the ACMA’s Cybersmart website www.cybersmart.gov.au/, which contains a wealth of resources, tips, activities and practical advice to help kids, teens, parents, teachers and librarians keep safe online.

The full program of ACMA activities for National Cyber Security Awareness Week is on the website www.cybersmart.gov.au/netbasics.aspx.
